Activities for parents and children at home

Strategies and activities to reduce stress and anxiety.

Recently we have been in lockdown at home due to the pandemic. Below are some ways to reduce stress and anxiety.

· Counting colours. Pick a colour and count everything you can see that is that colour. Change the colour and do the same until you feel the negative feelings pass. Turn this into a game with others if others are feeling the same. Good distraction and for moving children on if arguing/ fighting/bored.

· 5 senses grounding. This helps to stop you overthinking and calm the brain. Look around for 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell (if needed to, walk around the house and find things to smell), 1 thing you can taste ( if you cannot taste anything think of something you would like to taste).

· Listen to some music. Find a happy song/ fast beat song or one you can dance about silly too. Get others to join in if you feel comfortable. Do not listen to sad/emotional songs this may make you feel more melancholy (look up what this means-see, even I can set you to work to do!)

· Sing. Sing along to your favourite song. Make up your own song. Sing along with family members.
