Student’s Work Placement Will Help Her Dreams Come True

October 20, 2023

A University of Essex student is gaining valuable experience on a work placement with Dream The Change CIC.

Tyra Gumisiriza, who is studying Social Work for three years, is working with us for 70 days.

As she starts her placement, we asked her a few questions.

What is your name?

  • Tyra Gumisiriza

How old are you?

  • 20 Years Old

What are you studying, for how long and where?

  • I am studying social work, for 3 years at the University of Essex.

Where are you from?

  • I was born in England, in North London to be precise.

Have you worked/volunteered with any organisations similar to DTC before?

  • I have never volunteered at an organisation like DTC before.

What previous jobs have you done?

  • I have worked as a Bartender for festivals and concerts, a kiosk server at emirates stadium.

How will you be helping DTC?

  • I will be writing newsletters, researching barriers faced by parents of children with special needs (of ethnic backgrounds) accessing services.

For how long will you be helping?

  • I will be with DTC for 70 days.

What would you like to gain from the placement?

  • I would like to gain and develop my knowledge on families with children with special educational needs, such as the barriers they face, the support they already receive, as well as the lack of support they receive and how this could be improved.

What do you think of DTC?

  • I think it is an amazing organisation, it provides a community for families who might not have a support system, when, in fact, they might need it the most. This level of support being provided for these children and families Is shown through, the professional carer (Daniela) who provides respite care during the week and activities such as sport sessions every Wednesday.

What are your dreams for your future?

  • I would like to become a social worker within a school once I get my degree.

Jemal Allabeyeva, Co-Founder and Executive Director for Dream The Change welcomed Tyra.

She said, “I hope that Tyra enjoys her placement with us and gains all of the experience she needs to fulfil her dreams for a future as a social worker within a school.”
