We are excited to share about a new collaboration between Dream The Change, CIC, the charity Transforming Autism, and Re-Breathe. Together, we are working on a dedicated family support programme designed specifically for young autistic children from Black, Asian, and mixed ethnicity communities across Essex.

This vital initiative is backed by three years of funding secured by Transforming Autism from The National Lottery Community Fund.

What will this programme do?

The core of this project is early intervention. Transforming Autism will deliver support both in the home and through parent-focused sessions, working hand-in-hand with Dream The Change, CIC and Re-Breath in Colchester, who already possess strong, trusted relationships within their respective communities. Families will bring valuable insight and lived experience to the table, ensuring that the support offered isn’t just available, but is relevant, accessible, and truly reaches the families who need it most.

Addressing the gap

This programme is built on research and real-world observation. Studies show that children from ethnic minority and disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to experience delays in their autism diagnosis. Even when diagnosed, they are often less likely to access services that feel culturally relevant or tailored to their specific needs.

The goal of the joint programme is simple: close that gap. By focusing on families who face the biggest barriers to getting early support, we’re helping to ensure that no child falls through the cracks.

Looking ahead

This is just the beginning. Over the next three years, Transforming Autism will gather insights and data from the programme. These learnings will be used to:

  • Secure future funding
  • Build even stronger partnerships
  • Explore ways to embed successful elements of the programme more widely

The long-term vision is clear: making sure that all families, regardless of background or location, can access the right support at the right time.

Stay tuned as we embark on this exciting journey to make a tangible difference in the lives of young autistic children and their families in Essex.
